How to Translate Your Programs Into Compelling Videos
When High Water Women first came to us, the first thing they said was, “We want a video about our program.” We cringed a little bit. As we described in The Starter Guide to Non-Profit Video Storytelling, many non-profits fall into what we call “The Program Trap.” Their videos focus too much on what they do, instead of why they do it. Let’s be honest. Videos about programs end up putting people to sleep instead of making them feel something. We’ve learned that compelling, shareable, money raising videos are about people, not programs. more »
[Video] International Women’s Day Protest at Qalandia
From the moment we arrived at the International Women’s Day protest at the Qalandia checkpoint, we could’t hear ourselves think. The Israeli Defense Forces had already activated a sound bomb- a loud, persistent and painful noise that feels like a hammer pounding a nail into your eardrum. They were already launching tear gas canisters into the crowd and “skunk water” was being sprayed (a putrid, carcinogenic liquid with a smell that won’t leave for weeks). We soon realized that our plan to shoot many interviews with women wasn’t going to happen. And more »

NYU Wagner Holiday Video
Two years ago I was enrolling in a program at NYU Wagner School of Public Service to get an MPA in non-profit management. I knew dozens of people in Wagner who were some of my biggest heroes- Amita Swadhin who created Secret Survivors to create conversations about child sexual abuse, Eliana Godoy who is starting a venture which organizes immigrants to invest remittances in community projects and Courtney Montague, founder of Hidden Baby, a handbag company which supports innovative child welfare organizations. Inspired by these women, I was searching for more »

Today the online annual report for Team Schools (the Newark branch of KIPP charter schools) launches. We created four videos for the site which tell the stories of students whose lives have been profoundly impacted by TEAM schools. Each of these students’ stories blew me away. Ibraheem has gone from constantly running out of the classroom and refusing to try to read to now reading on grade level and dreaming of college. Mia realized that she is a good learner, gained her confidence back and grew several grade levels in more »
